APPALACHIAN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL
Papilio appalachiensis
In Alabama, this species is known from only Jackson County. Described in 2002, it is a close relative of the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, but can be differentiated by its larger size and paler yellow color. Additional field marks include: a solid yellow ventral submarginal band on the forewing as compared to disjointed spots in Eastern Tiger and a pale blue submarginal band on the ventral hindwing that is wider than that of Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.
