EASTERN TIGER SWALLOWTAIL

Papilio glaucus

One of the most common and conspicuous butterflies in Alabama and Mississippi.  Flies from the spring to the fall and is often attracted to mud in large numbers.  Males are yellow with black tiger stripes on both the upper and lower surface.  Females can be either yellow or black.  Yellow females can be distinguished from males by the presence of more extensive blue on the upper surface of the hindwing.  Black females still have the black tiger stripes visible, especially on the underside of the wings.
