Ellipsoptera hamata is a Gulf Coast species, limited to habitats such as coastal mudflats and sandy beaches, always near water; it is sometimes very common in its preferred habitat. Adults may be found from spring through late fall, but this is primarily a summer species. Two subspecies occur in our area -- lacerata, which has a brownish ground color, and the much less common monti, which is olive greenish instead.
