Somatochlora provocans
(Treetop Emerald)
Somatochlora provocans is an uncommon species in both Alabama and Mississippi, although it should occur across a greater area than current records would indicate. As with many members of the genus, adults are usually seen away from the breeding habitat (small, forested, spring-influenced trickles and runs), hawking for prey along dirt roads or other forest openings. As the common name implies, they often fly at considerable heights.
