Dythemis velox is a fairly common species across much of Alabama and Mississippi; records indicate that it may have spread to north Alabama fairly recently, and the species continues to extend its range to the north and east across the United States. Habitat of this wary dragonfly includes lakes (including large, man-made reservoirs), ponds, and sluggish pools in streams and large rivers.
