RED-SPOTTED PURPLE
Limenitis arthemis
A widespread and common species expected to occur throughout both Alabama and Mississippi. The iridescent blue on the dorsal surface of the hindwings is thought to mimic that of the Pipevine Swallowtail. The ventral surface is primarily black with orange spots both at base of wings and near the margin of the wings. Caterpillars feed on willows.
