HOBOMOK SKIPPER
Poanes hobomok
Uncommon throughout both Alabama and Mississippi and apparently restricted to the northern half of both states. Flies in late spring and early summer. Males sit in bright sunny spots and aggressively dart out to chase other butterflies. Underside of male's wings brown with a yellow postmedian patch and purple scales along trailing edge of wings. Upper surface of male's wings bright orange with dark brown borders. Females are dark brown with purple scales along the wing borders. Similar species: Zabulon Skipper
