Miathyria marcella
(Hyacinth Glider)
Miathyria marcella is a Neotropical species that is expanding its range through the southeast; it can now be found at numerous locations in the southern half of both Alabama and Mississippi. This dragonfly prefers lakes, ponds, ditches, or other lentic habitats, almost always with heavy floating vegetation, and usually including water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), the roots of which provide habitat for the nymphs.
