Libellula vibrans
(Great Blue Skimmer)
Libellula vibrans, the largest species of the genus in our area, is very common and should be present statewide in Alabama and Mississippi. It may be found around nearly any swamp, slowly flowing forested stream, woodland pool, or oxbow slough. The completely white face will separate this species from the very similar Slaty Skimmer (L. incesta) and Bar-winged Skimmer (L. axilena).
