Hylogomphus apomyius occurs in scattered populations across much of western and southern Alabama. In Mississippi the species apparently occurs throughout the state with the exception of the Mississippi River Delta. This tiny dragonfly is often overlooked due to its size and early flight season. Habitat is normally small to medium streams with cool water and a sand/gravel substrate.
