Argia plana
(Springwater Dancer)
Argia plana is largely a western species, not previously known to occur east of the Mississippi River, with the closest populations to Alabama/Mississippi occurring in Arkansas and Missouri. In 2011, a population of A. plana was discovered at a spring seepage within the Birmingham metropolitan area in Jefferson County, Alabama. Recently seen photographs have documented this species at a second locality, also in Jefferson County. It is unclear at this time whether either of these populations is native, or whether their occurrence is the result of an accidental introduction. The typical habitat for the species includes spring runs and hillside seeps.
