PEARL CRESCENT
Phyciodes tharos
One of the most common and abundant butterfly species in Alabama and Mississippi. The upper surface is orange and black with variable markings. Underside of hindwing cream or orange with with fine brown markings that often mask the pale crescent. Males have more orange and less markings on hindwings; females have tan hindwings with more markings. Similar species: Silvery Checkerspot and Phaon Crescent
